The weeks before a new school year are a useful time to check whether an anti-bullying policy matches what pupils, families and staff will actually experience when a concern is raised.

Start with the real reporting route
Check that the policy names the people and places pupils can use when they need help. A reporting route should be easy to explain in an assembly, a parent message and a private conversation with a member of staff.
Test the route with a simple question: if a pupil reports repeated exclusion today, would every adult know who receives the concern, how it is recorded and what happens next?
Review definitions, recording and follow-up
Make sure the policy uses clear language around bullying behaviour, impact, repetition, power imbalance, prejudice-based harm and online behaviour. Staff do not need identical wording in every conversation, but they do need a shared understanding of the process.
Check that recording includes follow-up dates. A response is not complete when the first conversation ends; the school should know how it will check whether the behaviour has stopped and whether the pupil feels safer.
Use pupil, parent and staff feedback
Policy review is stronger when it includes the people who use the system. Ask pupils whether they know where to go, ask families whether the communication is understandable and ask staff where the process feels unclear or difficult to apply.
Keep consultation focused on improving routes and consistency. Do not ask pupils to disclose personal incidents in a group activity or public survey.
Turn the review into a termly habit
Choose a small number of review points across the year: before term starts, after the first half term and after any campaign activity. Compare anonymised patterns, staff confidence and pupil understanding rather than waiting for a serious incident to expose a gap.
